1928-2015

Robert "Gint" MacKenzie

MacKENZIE, Robert "Gint" Anderson

We are sad to announce the passing of Robert "Gint" MacKenzie on Wed., Dec. 2, 2015. Words are inadequate to describe the loving impact that Dad has had on our lives.  He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend.

Born in Dominion in 1928, he was a son of the late Robert and Jessie (MacAulay) MacKenzie.  A graduate of Glace Bay High School and Acadia University, he taught school in Bridgetown, North Sydney, and at Sydney Academy.  He was principal of MacLennan Junior High in Westmount before becoming Sub-system Supervisor of Schools for C.B. County.  Gint coached hockey at Sydney Academy for twelve years, was an officer in the Royal Canadian Air Cadets, and served a term as Chairman of the N. S. School Athletic Federation. He was honored by Acadia’s Sports Hall of Fame, both as a member of championship hockey and rugby teams and as an individual athlete.  A lifelong sports enthusiast, he was a member of the Lingan Golf Club for over 50 years and also enjoyed curling, skiing, Ham Radio, and woodworking.  After his retirement, he and Beth spent many winters in Sarasota, Florida.  In recent years, he greatly enjoyed the friendship of "coffee club."

He is survived by his wife, Beth (Brinton); daughters, Kathy (Emo) Yango; Heather (Jimmy) Murphy; Nancy (Mark) Childs; and Barbara (Bill) Murray; sister, Mary MacDonald of Ottawa; grandchildren, Ryan, Jenna, and Kenzie Yango; Caleigh, Jessi (Swartzentruber), and Sophee Childs; Calla and Luke Murray; Kimberley (Ayman) Murphy and Sara (Ibrahim) Murphy Samandoulougou; great-grandchildren, Elli Beth and Zahraa.

He was predeceased by his brother, Art and sister, Jean.
