Ida Pearl Martin (nee Scott), age 102, passed away at the Palliative Care Unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital in the morning of Saturday July 6, 2019. Pearl was the last surviving member of her family. She was the daughter of the late John Rueben Galton Scott and Dinah (Bennett) Scott.
She was born in Port-Aux-Basques, Newfoundland on Dec 8 1916, and moved to Sydney Nova Scotia at the age of 18. She met and married her husband Baxter, of 66 years in Sydney, before moving to Ontario in 1968. After her husband retired, they made their way back to Sydney in 2001. She truly loved living on the East Coast and called it "home". For the past 8 years she has been a resident of My Cape Breton Home for Seniors in Westmount.
Pearl was a member of Church of Christ the King, Sydney and a member of the ACW for numerous years. She loved to knit and crochet and even at the age of 101 was still knitting baby hats and donating them to the hospital.
Pearl was predeceased by her husband Baxter (2008), her brothers and sisters; Frederick, John, Ethel Moulton, Marjorie Strickland, Rita Evans, Evelyn Lawrence, Arthur Gordon, Dorothy MacNeil, Kenneth and son-in law; Phil Lawrence.
Pearl is survived by her 4 children; Ruby (Marcel) Poirier, Alliston, ON, Gordon (Millie Seymour), Halifax, NS, Judith Lawrence, Sydney, NS, Elton (Rose) of New Waterford, NS and special daughter June Marra, Orillia, ON.
Pearl, aka "Nan" was a loving grandmother to 13; Glenda Poirier, Deanna Tomietto, Paula Williams, Donna Simard, Christopher Martin, Allen Lawrence, Brian Lawrence, Terry Lawrence, Mark Lawrence, Kathy Martin, Wanda Bates, Elton Jr Martin, and Blair Martin.
Pearl had 24 great grandchildren, to whom she treasured and loved dearly. She had a big family and a big heart. She touched a lot of lives and will be missed by all who knew her.
The family would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff and everyone who cared for Pearl at my Cape Breton Home for Seniors.
A visitaion will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel, 49 Welton St., Tuesday July 16, from 1-2pm, with a service in the chapel at 2pm, officiated by Rev. Jackie Warren. There will be a reception to celebrate Pearl’s life following the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to My Cape Breton Home for Seniors, Westmount or the Palliative Care Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
