Dorothy F. Martin is dead at 95
It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Dorothy F. (Dot) Martin. Dorothy was a life long resident of Sydney and currently a resident of the MacGillvary Guest Home where she has resided for the past number of years. Dorothy always enjoyed the company of the other guests and she very much appreciated the exceptional care provided by the loving and dedicated Staff. Dorothy died peacefully at the MacGillvary Guest Home in the company of loving family Sunday July 15, 2012.
Dorothy was born on Easter Monday April 9, 1917 and she enjoyed a long and wonderful life.
Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Daniel A. and Janet (Stevenson) MacDonald. She was a Hairdresser in Sydney for many years and maintained lifelong friendships with many of her former customers.
An exceptional athlete in her youth Dorothy excelled at track and field and was an accomplished tennis and badminton player. Dorothy also enjoyed swimming, skating, skiing, bridge and all forms of dance. Even in her later years Dorothy always enjoyed dancing at any family get-togethers. Mom was always known for her style, beauty, wit and her fun loving independent spirit. Her many life long friends are a testament to her grace and loyalty.
Above all else our Mom was a deeply spiritual person. Her tremendous faith in God guided her life from the beginning to the end.
A wonderful wife and fabulous mother she will be forever missed by her three children, Dorothy (Mr. Roger Leblanc), Barry (Mrs. Anne Marie Martin) and Brian (Mrs. Susan Martin), all of Sydney.
Dorothy is also survived by her loving grandchildren, Danielle MacKenzie (Mr. Tom MacKenzie), Adam Martin, Jennifer Weber (Mr. Daniel Weber), Alex Martin (Mrs. Michelle Martin), Katie Martin and Brian Martin. She is also survived by four great-grandchildren, Stephanie LeBlanc, Nolan Weber, Ava Weber and Jaden Martin. Dorothy is also survived by her many nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly and was immensely proud.
Her tremendous sense of humour and love of music and dance will be remembered fondly by all that knew her.
Her selfless generosity will forever be engraved upon our hearts and thoughts. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Church and a long-time supporter of numerous Catholic charities epically the society for the propagation of the faith, the holy childhood association and the call of the poor.
She was predeceased by her husband Harold (Hal) Martin, two brothers, Professor James (Jim) MacDonald and Cyril (CY) MacDonald and two sisters, Mary Wicks and Catherine Kenny McGee.
Visitation will take place Tuesday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at the Sydney Memorial Chapel. The Funeral mass will take place Wednesday, 2:00 p.m. in St. Joseph’s Church, Sydney. Interment is to take place at the Resurrection Cemetery.

When we have passed the test we were sent to earth to learn,
we are allowed to graduate. We are allowed to shed our body which imprisons our soul the
way a cocoon encloses the future butterfly, and when the time is right
we can let go of it. Then we will be free of pain, free of fears, free of worry
free as a beautiful butterfly returning home to God which is a place
where we are never alone, where we continue to grow and sing and to
dance, where we are with those we loved and we are surrounded with
more love than we can ever imagine.
