Sydney

It is with deep sorrow that we, the family, regret to announce the passing of Alexander “Alex” MacGregor on Monday, February 17, 2020, at the An Cala Unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.

Born in Pleasant Bay on March 20, 1943, he was the son of the late John and Georgetta (Moore) MacGregor.

Alex started his career as a linesman with MT&T when he was just 17 yrs old. After many years as a linesman, he was promoted to Business Service Manager and continued with MT&T for a total of 34 yrs. retiring in 1994. Following his retirement, he took on many volunteer roles such as president of the Telephone Pioneers, founder of the “Celebration of Light” in the United Protestant Church in Sydney River, he was actively involved with the United Protestant Church Brotherhood and also spent many hours volunteering for the Kettle campaign with The Salvation Army. In 2007, he embarked on a new journey which found him as a pulpit supply (lay minister) for the United Protestant Church. During his time as a pulpit supply, he spent many Sundays in Louisbourg and Catalone, where he met some wonderful people and made some very close friends. This was a responsibility he undertook with great pride and will always be remembered as a wonderful speaker.

Alex is survived by his wife, Matilda (Royal); daughter, Cheryl Ann (Michael) Briggs; son, Sandy (Norma); sister, Mary Hope (Alex) Fraser; grandchildren. Isabel(Justin), Spencer (Kylie), Adam (Laura), Evan(Shelby), Andrew (Brittany); great-grandchildren, Mackenzie, with whom he had a very special connection, Hudson and Violet. A special mention to Alex’s niece, Brandy Legace whom he had a very special relationship with.

Besides his parents he was predeceased by his brother, Donald Arthur.

Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Wednesday, February 19, 2020 from 4-7 p.m. Funeral Service will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. in the United Protestant Church of Sydney River. Rev. Dana Feltmate officiating. Interment will take place later in Pleasant Bay.

A special thanks to the staff and physicians in the An Cala Unit for their kindness and compassion during his stay.

Memorials may be made to the Salvation Army.

Family flowers only.
