Westmount

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Aubrey Lewis Bonnell, at his home in Westmount, on Thursday, February 20, 2020, at the age of 87.

He was the son of the late Harvey and Agnes Bonnell.

Aubrey was predeceased by his loving wife of 46 years, Edwina.

He will be sadly missed by his children, Sharon (Roddie) McNamara, Ross Ferry, Wayne (Eileen), Coxheath, Heather (Rob) MacLean, Sydney River, Blair (Lana), Lingan and his daughter, Nancy, with whom he resided. Aubrey is also survived by his grandchildren, who were his pride and joy, Nicole, Geoff (Mallory), Carrie, Nathan, James and Kiona and great-grandchildren, Taylor, Dylan and Sara. Aubrey is also survived by his siblings, Owen (Anne) Bonnell, Anna MacGillivary, Roy (Fern) Bonnell and Donnie (Anne) Bonnell; sister-in-law, Rose Bonnell; and several nieces and nephews.

Aubrey was also predeceased by his brother, Harvey Jr.; sister, Colleen (Harry) Baigent; sisters-in-law, Andrea (Dougie) Walker and Marion MacNeil; and brother-in-law, George MacGillivary.

In 1989, Aubrey retired from the Sydney Steel Plant where he worked as a Rail Mill Operator. He was a member of Westmount United Church. Aubrey was also a member of the Harbourside Senior’s Club and enjoyed playing tarabish at the Pensioner’s Club. In his retirement years, he enjoyed the many friends he made from his morning visits to Tim Hortons. Aubrey spent many summers with his family and a great group of friends at their bungalow in Benacadie Pond. Those memories and great times will last forever for all of us. Aubrey loved Christmas time with his family. He spent many hours and days decorating his home for his family and others to enjoy. This spirit will live on in all of his children’s hearts.

Special thanks and gratitude are extended to Dr. Greg Myatt and Janice Black for their excellent care throughout the years and to the County Homemakers for the past few months.

Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Sunday, February 23 from 3-7 p.m. Funeral service will be held at Westmount United Church on Monday, February 24 at 11 a.m., with Reverend Dr. Thomas Whent officiating. Cremation has taken place.

Memorials may be made to the Westmount United Church Memorial Fund or a charity of choice.
