Blanche Roper

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, who died peacefully in her sleep on August 30, 2019.

Mom was predeceased by her husband, Ben Roper; her parents, Percy and Jean Roper of Ingonish; and her brothers, Carl, Henry and Jim.

She is survived by her children, Doreen (Ken), Sharon (Millard), David (Carolyn) and Pam; her grandchildren, Tania (Christopher), Stephanie (Robert), Debra (Michael), Ryan (Jenny) and Justin (Nina); and her great-grandchildren, Jona, Chelsea, Emilia, Anna, London, Boston, Vanja, and Vukasin. She was a loving aunt to many nieces and nephews, including those of her brother, Jim, Audrey, Sue, Raymond, Wendy, Valerie and Angie.

Mom lived a life of great adventure and caring. She was the loving centre of our family, and created homes in many places in Canada as we were able to experience the  privilege of living in a number of national parks, due to our Dad's career as a Chief Park Warden with Parks Canada. Mom was an active member of many communities, whether that be church, 4-H, Eastern Star, the Women's Institute of Nova Scotia, and several seniors' clubs. She was also a volunteer for numerous charities, including being a canvasser for the Canadian cancer society, and delivering Meals on Wheels. Mom was an active member of the United Church Women of Canada for all of her adult life.

Mom was an avid traveler, taking trips well into her 90s. Above all, she loved spending time with her family and friends, and taking joy in every moment of life. She had a lovely, positive outlook, with a ready smile for everyone. She enjoyed a good game of cards, and actually lived the adage: eat dessert first. She was a welcomed and valued member of every community in which she lived. We want to give special thanks to the staff at Harbourstone, Wentworth Court where Mom spent the last year and a half of her life. Their loving care, especially in her final few days with us, is so greatly appreciated by Blanche's family.

Visitation will take place at the United Protestant Church of Sydney River on Monday, September 2, 2019, from 1-3 p.m., followed by a funeral service at 3 p.m.with Rev. Dana Feltmate officiating. Interment in Alfred Smith Cemetery. Arrangements under the care and direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel.

Donations in her memory may be made to a charity of your choice.

Words of comfort can be sent to the family at www.sydneymemorialchapel.ca or e-mail sydneymemorialchapel@ns.sympatico.ca
