David Richard Carroll, 75 of Sydney, passed away Wednesday August 7, 2019 at his residence.

Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Gervase and Mary (MacIssac) Carroll.

Dave was a retired steelworker working for Sydney Steel Corporation for 34.5 years. Some of his accomplishments he was proud of are, one of the founding members of Powerlifting Nova Scotia, owner of CB Barbell Club hosting several tournaments all over Cape Breton and personsonally winning several, including the annual tournament in his favourite place, Margaree. He competed in the World Powerlifting Championships in 1972 in Pennsylvania and also judging in 1989 when they were held in Sydney. Dave wrote sports articles for The Highlander news paper and Powerlifting USA. However his proudest accomplishment was a 415 lb bench press and a 625 lb bench off the rack. Known as "Big Dave" by many people in his weightlifting days. He was physically strong, but had the softest, kindest heart.
Dave had the gift to gab and was a social butterfly . He shopped at Sobeys almost daily to "pick up a few things" but mainly to chat with friends and staff. He also enjoyed sipping late night coffee with "the boys" at Tim Hortons. Dave had quick witted comebacks and a great sense of humour always telling jokes. He was a huge HABS fan that has been passed down to his children.

Dave is survived by his daughters Nellie and Jackie (Randy) Scott, both of Sydney, Ann Marie (Chris) Carroll, Cole Harbour, sons Donnie (Kim), Sydney, Billy (Shelly), London, ONT., Dave and Shaun both of Sydney, the mother of his children Marie, Sydney, sisters Mary (Mike) Parago, Elaine (Lauchie) Carroll, both of Sydney, brothers Basil (Raylene), Sydney, Frank, (Barbara), Truro, Russell, Sydney, Brent (Monica), Halifax, special sister-in-laws Carole and Violet, 16 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.

Besides his parents he was predeceased by his brothers John, Raymond, Leo and Brian in infancy and a great granddaughter Jaileigh Kwok.

Funeral mass will be held Tuesday August 13, 2019 at 11 am in St. Marguerite Bourgeoys (Cabot Street), with Rev. Dennis Lamey officiating. Interment will take place at a later date in Resurrection Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Parkinson’s Foundation.
