Denis Bird

Cartwright, Labrador

January 7, 1958 - September 25, 2019

Denis once said “don’t call me the late Denis Bird when I die, I wasn’t late for anything in my life!”

Denis was a teacher who, in the words of a former student, “…was a really wonderful man, a great teacher and just an easy-going friendly person. I’ll always remember him for approaching teaching with tact, empathy and compassion.”

He was the middle child, sandwiched between Chip and Fiona...not always an easy place to be!

He was the much loved “Uncle D” to Michael,Alison, Daniel, Emily, Margaret, Ashley, Travis, Craig and Claire!  He took great joy in celebrating their special moments with them.

Denis captured hearts and minds, making lasting friendships throughout his life.  From childhood, he and Ted, his cousin, were ‘brothers’ and Zelda became his loyal friend!  He valued the close connections with his devoted friends, never losing touch. He looked forward to Fiona and Craig’s visits and he was always grateful when friends would take the time to write, call and visit. He thoroughly enjoyed visitors and notes from home. You helped ease the incredible loneliness resulting from his disease and his distance from home.

Denis continued to form new bonds with fellow travellers on the path throughout his illness, including some very special caregivers…as we all say, “everyone loved Denis”.

He loved Dorothy because she became his fiercest advocate and defender! I told him that he had to find his own wife but he contentedly allowed her to care for him! We had a lot of fun with him during the last three years; sometimes we laughed and cried at the same time! He never lost his sense of humour; even when he could no longer speak, he spoke with his eyes!

We owe a great debt of gratitude to so many: The Mental Health, Geriatric and Palliative Care Units at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital; The staff at Parkland Cape Breton and Miner’s Lane at Harbourstone Enhanced Care; Chris and Allan at Home Instead; Mary Ruth Joseph, Palliative Care Nurse and Angel.

We will celebrate Denis’s life at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church in Happy Valley-Goose Bay on October 12th at 2:00 P.M.

His wish is that, instead of cards and flowers, you donate to the place that treated him so well during his illness, the place where staff embraced him and helped diagnose the Lewy Body Dementia that eventually ended his life — the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.  If you could spare a few minutes to support the work of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation (http://www.becauseyoucare.ca), I’m certain that the next butterfly that you see will be Denis thanking you!
