Donald William "Bill" Black

January 4, 1954 - June 24, 2020

We, the family of Donald William “Bill” Black, regret to announce his passing on Wednesday, June 24, 2020, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.

Born January 4, 1954, in Sydney, he was the son of the late Donald and Margaret (Budge) Black.

For 37 years, Bill was employed at the Spring Garden Villa/Harbourstone, never missing a day.  For Bill, this was not just a job. He loved going to work every day because he got to be around the residents, putting a smile on their faces. Bill was quite the handyman who was always there to help anyone at any time. He would literally give you the shirt off his back.

Bill’s greatest love in life was family. He and his brother,Scott talked every single day, especially to share wrestling stories.  He had an incredible 35 years with his wife,Reina, whom he worshipped the ground she walked on. His pride and joy was his stepdaughter, his three precious grandchildren and great-granddaughter. Bill was an incredible role model to them and now, as adults, they appreciate and live the lessons he instilled in them, such as the value of a strong work ethic, being kind, having patience, having a sense of humour, treating everyone with respect and actually making time to spend with your loved ones. If you ever met Bill Black, you instantly loved him, laughed at his funny stories and knew he was just a solid guy.

Bill is survived by his wife, Reina (Travis); daughter,Danyelle Miles (Angelo Spinazzola); grandchildren, Ryan Miles Smith (Erin Chaisson), Rochelle Nadine (Brett) Simmons and Nolan Daniel Smith; great-grandchildren, Sawyer Margaret Elizabeth Simmons; sisters, Elizabeth and Donelda, Boston; brother, Scott Black, Sydney; and other family members.

Donations in his name can be made to either, the Cape Breton SPCA because of Bill’s love of animals, especially his buddy, Bella or to the Palliative Care Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.

Words cannot express our gratitude to the healthcare workers who were there when we needed them. A very special thank you to Dr. Paul Murphy and to the very caring, beautiful palliative care nurse, Sharon MacKenzie.

Words of comfort can be sent to the family at www.sydneymemorialchapel.ca or e-mail sydneymemorialchapel@ns.sympatico.ca
