Elizabeth “Bette” Florence (MacKenzie) Cook

Sydney/New Waterford/Winnipeg

It is with great sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of Elizabeth Florence (MacKenzie) Cook, 84, at the Grace Hospital in Winnipeg, MB on December 11, 2018.

Born March 10, 1934, Bette was the daughter of the late Harold and Jenny (Burke) MacKenzie of Sydney.

She was a devout lady whose passion was teaching Sunday school and singing in the various military chapel choirs where they were stationed.  Bette was a beautiful person with a kind personality and despite illnesses, was never heard to complain.

She is deeply missed by her loving husband of 66 years, Leonard; sons, Glenn, Bruce (Angela), Todd (Jannine) and Scott (Dawna); grandchildren, Jason (Lisa), Myles, Ian, Ryan, Matthew, James, Mackenzie, Tessa, Emaline, Riana and Jade and four great-grandchildren.

When Len retired, they bought an RV and traveled extensively throughout Canada and the USA.  For 14 years they escaped the cold Manitoba winters by going to Texas and the hot Manitoba summers by traveling to their cottage in Big Pond, Cape Breton, which they referred to as their “little bit of Heaven”.  When walking with Len, Bette loved to hold hands, a practice they continued throughout their lives, even when falling to sleep at night.  Len was at her hospital bedside almost continuously for her final three days of life and was there as she passed away to be with her Lord Jesus.

As per Bette’s request, cremation took place and we have brought her home to her beloved Cape Breton.  A Celebration of Bette’s Life will be held at All Saints Church, New Waterford on Saturday, August 24 at 2 p.m., with Rev. Myrna MacMullin officiating. Following the service, a reception will be held in the church hall.  Private interment will take place at a later time.
