Elizabeth "Betty" MacVicar

July 1, 1941 - March 8, 2020

Sydney

It is with heavy hearts that we, the family, wish to announce the passing of our beloved Aunt Betty on Sunday, March 8, 2020, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Sydney, NS, surrounded by her loving family.

Born July 1, 1941, in Sydney, she was a daughter of the late John Collin and Ada (Duxbury) MacVicar.

Betty was a proud Cape Bretoner, Cape Breton truly being the home of her heart. She will forever be remembered for her soft-spoken positive spirit, her sense of humor and zest for life. Most of all, Betty will be remembered for her devotion to her family. Employed as a live-in nanny/caregiver for her sister, Jean, husband, Larry and their family, she worked tirelessly without complaint. Betty had a special bond with her sister, Marilyn and spent many hours shopping, travelling and spending time with her and the extended family. In recent years, she stayed close to home, never missing her favorite shows, Dr. Phil, Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy. Betty loved all animals and will be greatly missed by her canine companion, White Sox. Caramilk bars were her absolute favorite treat and they will always remind us of Betty. She possessed a natural grace and a calm sense of peace that comes from deep within the spirit of a truly selfless person. We will miss you. Our world will shine a little less bright without our sweet Aunt Betty.

Betty is survived by her nieces and nephews, who she raised as her children, Eileen, Anne, William and Lawrence Stewart, all of Sydney. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Caddy and Kay MacVicar, as well as many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

The last surviving member of her immediate family, Betty was predeceased by her sisters, Marilyn MacVicar, Peggy Dauphinee and Jean Stewart and brothers, Carl, Angus, Lawrence and Allan, as well as her niece “her daughter”, Marie Stewart.

Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Thursday, March 12 from 7-9 p.m. A funeral Mass will be held at St. Theresa’s Church on Friday, March 13 at 11 a.m., with Rev. Dennis Lamey officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery.

The family wishes to extend a sincere thank you to all staff of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, especially the staff of 3A and Palliative Care. The professional, compassionate care you gave our Aunt Betty was much appreciated and will never be forgotten.

Memorials may be made to Palliative Care, SPCA, or any charity close to your heart.
