Evelyn Muriel Warren

It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of our loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Evelyn Muriel (Smith) Warren at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, An Cala Unit on Sunday, November 3, 2019, surrounded by her loving family.

Evelyn was born July 1, 1935, to the late Sidney and Janet (Morgan) Smith and lived in the Ashby area of Sydney. Evelyn and Lloyd married in 1954 and built their home on MacLeod Street in Whitney Pier, where they resided for over 50 years.

She worked for Maritime Tel & Tel and Cape Breton Printers, before returning to school in 1973 at Cape Breton Business College. In 1974, she commenced working at the Sydney City Hospital for the School of Nursing and later, the Lab Office, retiring in 1995.

Evelyn and Lloyd enjoyed travelling and also spent many summers at Seal Island and St. Peters. Christmas dinners were always a marked celebration for them, welcoming many relatives and friends to their home.

Evelyn was a very generous woman, giving monetary donations to many organizations. She would knit mittens throughout the year and donate up to a 100 pairs in December to local charities. Evelyn also enjoyed knitting baby hats to donate to the Maternity Department at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Christmas 2018, she prepared 20 ‘Shoe Boxes’, filling them with personal care items for people in need and donating them to the Salvation Army for distribution.

In 1942, when Evelyn was in Brownies, their group sent gifts to another Brownie group in England during World War II; she became ‘pen pals’ with Cynthia Hogue. A relationship that began when they were seven years old spanned her entire life, with letters, post cards, phone calls, visits and exchanging Christmas gifts every year. Their last visit occurred September 20, 2019, when Cynthia’s cruise ship docked in the Port of Sydney and they enjoyed a final visit while Evelyn was a patient in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.

Evelyn is survived by her two daughters, Kimberly (Vincent) Young and Wendy (Fred) Furlong; five grandchildren, Bradley Young, Christopher (Jennifer) Young, Michelle (Luc MacInnis) Furlong, Katherine (Mike) Smith and Jimmy Furlong; and three great-grandchildren, Hailey Smith, Rose Smith and Benjamin Young. She is also survived by her sister, Marjorie (Buddy) Rodgers.

Besides her parents, Evelyn was predeceased by her husband, Lloyd (2014).

As per Evelyn’s request, there will be no visitation. Interment will take place at the family gravesite in Eastmount Cemetery, Whitney Pier.

The family would like to express gratitude to Dr. Greg Myatt and staff, Janice and Laura, for their care and compassion shown to Evelyn over the years, as well as the staff of 4B at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. A special thank you to the doctors, nurses and volunteers on the An Cala Palliative Care Unit for giving Evelyn her introduction to heaven.

Donations in Evelyn’s memory may be made to the Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton County, 4th Floor Cape Breton Regional Hospital, PO Box 561 Sydney, NS, B1P 6H4 or www.hospicecapebreton.org.

“Goodbye my family, my life is past

I loved you all to the very last

Weep not for me but courage take

Love each other for my sake

For those you love don’t go away

They walk beside you every day.”
