Freda Marusiak

February 12, 1952 - June 14, 2022

|

Whitney Pier

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother and wife, Freda Gertrude Marusiak (nee Colbourne) of Whitney Pier, NS, on Tuesday, June 14, 2022.

Freda was born in 1952, and was the youngest daughter of the late Fred and Vivian (Verge) Colbourne.

Besides her parents, Freda was predeceased by her sisters, Doris Heading and Minni (Bud) MacDonald and brothers, Harold, George, Frederick, and Jerry. She was also predeceased by her sisters-in-law, Lorraine and Sharon Colbourne and brothers-in-law, Arthur Heading and Brian Marusiak.

Freda is survived by her loving and patient husband, John Marusiak; daughters, Carol Ann, Laurie (Kris) Tynski and Margie (David) Stone; son, Jerry (Alana) Colbourne; and brother, Gord (Sylvia) Colbourne.  She was a very special Aunt to her many nieces and nephews, affectionately called Aunt Gertz.

Freda’s greatest joy was raising her daughters and being with her husband and best friend, John. Through her years, she became mother to many of her nieces and nephews and to her, there was no greater joy then being in their presence. In the past couple of years, she took such joy in seeing her great-nephew, Jackson and great-nieces, Neveah, Paisley, Carla and Lily who would visit and play with her. Every year they looked forward to visiting Freda’s second home at the Hideaway Campground. The campers there were also an extended family and she will be missed thoroughly for her chats, bonfires and tarabish games.

For many years, Freda worked with her brother, Gerald at the City Hospital and St Rita’s Hospital canteens and later as Ground Supervisor at Whitney Pier Memorial. It is here where she found a way to guide more youth and become a friend to many, who would always come back to visit even though they had moved on to high school.  She even had a jingle given to her, “Freda is the one who makes you spit out your gum and take your hat off your head.”

The family would like to thank Freda’s best friends, Pat MacDonald and Karen Bray for their continuous friendship and support over the years and being there for us during this time. Thank you to the staff of 4A and Palliative Care for their dedication to mom: Briar, Alyssa, Emily, Ashley, Dr. Zabo and Dr. Abboud.

Thank you to the VON, Osprey Health and Cape Breton Homecare for assisting her over the last few years to keep her at home with her loving family.

Visitation will take place Thursday, June 16, 2022, in Sydney Memorial Chapel from 4-7 pm. Funeral service will be held Friday, June 17, 2022, at 11 a.m. in the Chapel with Rev. Myrna MacMullin officiating. Interment will take place at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the BGC Cape Breton Whitney Pier Youth Club or the Cape Breton SPCA.

Words of comfort can be sent to the family at www.sydneymemorialchapel.ca or e-mail sydneymemorialchapel@ns.sympatico.ca
