George "Billy" William Martin

March 24, 1926-January 8, 2020

Big Ridge

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of “Billy” Martin on Wednesday, January 8, 2020, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.

Born March 24, 1926, in Sydney, he was the son of the late Malcolm and Gertrude (Martin) MacQueen.

Billy spent most of his life in Big Ridge where he was raised by his father and stepmother, Tina. He was a caring father/grandfather to his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Billy was a member of St. Columba Presbyterian Church, Marion Bridge and one of the original members of the Boy Scouts of Marion Bridge. He worked at Sydney Steel, for Duncan MacDonald (19 yrs.) and the Department of Highways (17 yrs.).

Billy is survived by his son, George (Kathy), Big Ridge; daughters, Shirley (James) Gottwald, Reserve Mines, Sharon (Steve) Metcalfe, Reserve Mines, Sandra (Eric) Doyle, Big Ridge, Lisa MacIntyre, Sydney and Heather MacIntyre, South Bar.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Florence and brothers, Ross, Gordon and Frederick MacQueen.

Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Sunday, January 12 from 3-6 p.m.  A funeral service will be held at St. Columba Presbyterian Church, Marion Bridge on Monday, January 13 at 11 a.m., with Rev. Lydia MacKinnon officiating.  Interment in Riverview Cemetery. Following the service, a reception will be held at St. Columba Church Hall.

Memorials may be made to St. Columba Presbyterian Church or the An Cala, Palliative Care Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
