Christmas Island

It is with great sadness we, the family, announce the passing of Hans Bryden Udby, age 55, of Christmas Island. Hans passed away Friday, February 12, 2021, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, after a two year courageous battle with Multiple Myeloma.

Hans was born in Musquodoboit Hbr., NS, February 10, 1966,to Ernst Udby and the late Theresa “Gracie” (Bryden) Udby.

Hans was a gentle, kind soul who loved the outdoors as was evident by his chosen career in Forestry as a self-employed woodsman. This enabled him to continue to live and work locally in and near his beloved Christmas Island.

Hans is survived by his wife, Gwen (MacDonald); sons, Kaj and Thomas; sisters, Karen (Ed) Mason and Barra (Ward) Beck; brothers, Charlie (Diane) and Paul (Beth), all living in Nova Scotia. He is also survived by his Aunt Denise (the late Bernie Bryden), Alberta and Uncle Svend Udby (Agnes),from Denmark; mother-in law, Rose (the late Ronald MacDonald); brothers-in-law, Larry (Murdell) and John Stephen (Donna); sisters-in-law, Wanda, Cheryl (Donnie), Zina (Gerard), Denise (Kevin) and Stacy (Paul); and numerous nieces and nephews.

A special thank you to his cousin, Elaine Cuff, who has been a huge support to the family over the past several years. Thank you to all our close family and friends who have been with us throughout his two year battle. Our gratitude goes out to Hematology and the Cancer Centre in Sydney and Halifax, the palliative care team who visited our home, as well as the VON nurses and the An Cala Unit at the CBRH.

A service will be held at a later date when friends and family can gather to celebrate the life of Hans.

Donations in Han’s name can be made to the Cape Breton Cancer Patient Care Fund, Cape Breton Down Syndrome Society or L’arche Cape Breton.

Words of comfort may be sent to the family at www.sydneymemorialchapel.com or emailed to sydneymemorialchapel@ns.sympatico.ca.
