James “Jim” Mitchell

It is with great sadness that the family of James “Jim” Mitchell, 73, announces his passing on Saturday, September 14, 2019, in the Sussex Health Center, Sussex, NB, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born November 18, 1945, in Halifax, he was the son of the late Jim and Jessie (Brown) Mitchell.

Jim grew up in Gabarus Lake, Cape Breton, working alongside his father in their family sawmill business. There, he began training at the Sydney Judo Club under Sensei Calvin Boutilier, ultimately achieving his 4th degree black belt.  At the peak of his judo career, Jim represented Nova Scotia on a national level, holding the title in Atlantic Canada for several years and finally opening his own judo club in Gander, NL.  He later returned to the Halifax area where he began a successful career in business.  This success allowed him the opportunity to travel extensively worldwide with his wife and many close friends by his side.  Jim had many other interests and hobbies, which included boating at the Armdale Yacht Club, playing music at many social gatherings and cruising in his antique cars.  Throughout it all, Jim was a devoted son, husband, father and grandfather, who volunteered as a coach and cub leader, supported the school breakfast and music programs, as well as ensured the Zion United Church in Gabarus Lake had everything they needed.

He is survived by his sons, James (Kristin), Hampton, NB and Adam, Rothesay, NB; grandchildren, Jasper, Lauren and Daniel; many nieces, nephews and close friends.

Jim was predeceased by his wife, Diane (MacPhail) and sister, Judy Poisson.

At Jim’s request, a private family service will take place in Gabarus Lake on Wednesday, September 18, followed by a reception in Zion Wesley United Church, Gabarus Lake at 11 a.m.

Friends and family are welcome to attend a gathering to share stories, jokes and music at the Sackville Lions Hall, 101 Old Beaverbank Rd., Lower Sackville on Friday, September 20 from 6-10 p.m. Refreshments will be served, as well as a cash bar and musicians are encouraged to share their gift of entertainment.

Memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Words of comfort can be sent to the family at www.sydneymemorialchapel.ca or e-mail sydneymemorialchapel@ns.sympatico.ca
