James Steylen

September 3, 1927 - May 30, 2021

|

Louisbourg

We, the family, would like to announce the passing of James Steylen of Louisbourg on May 30, 2021, at the age 93.   Dad passed as he desired, peacefully at home in the company of family members listening to his favorite classical music, The Four Seasons by Vivaldi.
Born in the Netherlands on September 3, 1927, Antonius Josephus Henricus Steijlen, immigrated to Canada with his new bride. They arrived at Pier 21 in Halifax on March 10, 1954 on their way to begin a new life in Louisbourg.  Dad went to work with Charlie Stacey at the Irving garage. After a couple years and children, Dad purchased the ESSO service station, where customers quickly attached nicknames such as, "The Esso Man" and "Shimmy Shicken" (he loved KFC).  Through hard work and long hours, the "family" business became very successful.
Dad became heavily involved in the community by way of becoming a Town Councillor for 21 years, Deputy Mayor for two terms, Chairman of the School Board, member of the Planning Commission and various other local committees. At the age of 61, he retired and travelled extensively visiting family throughout Canada, the Netherlands and Australia.
Dad was predeceased by his parents, Antonius Henricus Martinus Steijlen “Henk” and Petronella Philomena Aloijsia De Kuijer “Nellie”; brother, Harry of Louisbourg, as well as sisters, Miek Bolsius and Miep Janssen of the Netherlands.
Dad is survived by Alida (Iet), his loving wife of close to 68 years and children, Ronald, Albert Bridge, Anita (Bob Williamson),Ontario, Gary (Irene), Bras d'Or, Nancy (Anthony Mancini), Alberta, Robert (Janice), Louisbourg, René (Rose), Louisbourg and Nicholas (Jennifer), New Brunswick.  His grandchildren include, Alycia (Zeez), Eric (Shelby), Angelo, Michael, Matthew, JD, Leaha, Myles, Warren, Jeremy (Alicia), Holly, Adam, Gabrielle and Lauren and 13 great-grandchildren.  Dad is also survived by his youngest brother, Ed Steylen and sisters, Ans Beerendank and Nora Habraben all of the Netherlands.
Dad was especially happy to have had the opportunity to say goodbye to his beloved wife, all his children and grandchildren, as well as family members in the Netherlands and Australia. This was made possible through the efforts of his doctors, home care workers, VON and palliative care staff that made Dad's last days at home comfortable.
As a husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Dad will truly be forever missed.
