Sydney

Jean Marie Quirk of Sydney passed away on Wednesday, May 20th, 2020 at the Miners Memorial Manor in Sydney Mines. She was born in New Waterford September 23, 1931.

After graduating from St. F.X , Class of 52 , and the Maritime School of Social Work at Kings College, she embarked on a career in social work, one that spanned nearly forty years, mainly in the placement of children in new homes throughout Cape Breton. She was well known and respected in her field.

During her lifetime Jean was known as an avid reader, sometimes reading three to four books a week. She was also passionate about gardening and collecting antiques. Well noted for her hospitality, she hosted almost all family birthdays and holiday events at her home in Sydney’s south end where she resided for over sixty years. She was happiest when surrounded by her grandchildren. She was a devote mother, grandmother and great grandmother.

Jean was also an early supporter of the Sydney Police Boys Club and she frequently volunteered at the St. Vincent de Paul Society.

A devote catholic she was a member of St Marguerite Bourgeoys Parish in Sydney and had a special devotion to St Joseph.

Surviving is her daughter and caregiver Anne Marie Quirk, son Jim (Kathleen) Quirk, grandchildren Christopher, Laura (Devin) Murray, great grand daughter Zoey Murray, her brother Francis (Judy) MacEachern and her close friend and cousin Marie (Lionel) Totten.

She was predeceased by her parents Francis and Rose MacEachern, New Waterford, her first grandchild Jennifer Marie Quirk, her sister in-law Doris MacEachern and her former husband Jim Quirk Sr.

We would like to thank the CCA’s and nurses at the Miners Manor who provided care to our mother during her stay. Also, thank you to Larry and Doreen Burke for their many visits to Mom when she was in the home.

While we feel blessed that our mother lived a full and long life, we will miss her for the rest of our lives.

A private family service will be held at a later date
