Joan Hutchinson

We, the family of Joan Martha Hutchinson, regret to announce her passing on Tuesday, September 8, 2020, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.

Born October 5, 1943, in New Waterford, she was the daughter of the late Wilfred and Anna (Murrant) McNeil.

In 1975, Joan graduated from CBBC and worked at both Electrolux and Woolco.  Joan was a member and elder of the United Protestant Church of Sydney River. She was also a long-time member of the Coxheath Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. A loving wife, mother and grandmother, Joan’s family was her life and she will be greatly missed.

Joan is survived by her loving husband of over 61 years, Robert; daughter, Nancy (Glenn) Penney, Riverview, NB; son, Robert (Jane), Dartmouth; grandchildren, Christopher (Michelle) Penney, Riverview, NB and Charlene (Yasha) Troubetzkoy, St. Lucia; sisters, Winnifred MacLeod, Sydney River, Donna (James) Payne, ON, Carol “Perky” (Arnold) Morton, ON and Janie (Bernard) Brake, Coxheath; and brother, Wilfred “Whipper” McNeil (Colleen Shepherd), Glace Bay, as well as her many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides her parents, Joan was predeceased by her sisters, Cecella “Ce” Crago, Beverley “Ginger” Power, Cathy Swan and Virginia (in infancy).

We would like to sincerely thank the ER and CCU staff at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, as well as Dr. Paul MacDonald, Dr. Paul Morrison and the 4 East staff at the Northside General Hospital.

A memorial service will be held at a later date at the United Protestant Church of Sydney River, with interment in the Alfred Smith Cemetery to follow.
