Margaret Ann “Peggy” MacDonald
Sydney Forks
Margaret Ann “Peggy” MacDonald, 82, of Sydney Forks, passed away Sunday, August 25, 2019, in the Palliative Care Unit at Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Peggy was born August 27, 1936, in Sydney, to the late Joseph and Mary (Campbell) MacIntyre.
She believed in hard work and her motto was, “be thankful you can put your feet on the floor each day to do the work at hand.” In her early years, Peggy worked for the telephone company, but left that role in 1972 to work with her husband, Laughie owning and operating Atlantic Fuels. For last 36 years, she worked as secretary at Resurrection Cemetery, retiring in June 2019. Peggy believed in community and was always there to support neighbours, friends and family, especially in their time of need. She had a sweet tooth and was well-known for sharing her hot tea, cheesecake, fruit cake and trifle. Peggy volunteered with the Sydney Forks Recreation Centre, Unity House Board and St. Mary’s Parish Council. This year she received her 50 year pin from the CWL and has been a Eucharistic Minister at St. Mary’s Church, East Bay for last 36 years.
Peggy will always be loved and remembered by her children, Ambrose MacDonald, Sydney Forks and Lena MacDonald (Tommy MacEachern), Antigonish; brothers, Dougall, Sydney and Michael (Anne) MacIntyre, Massachusetts, USA; sister, Leona (Norm) MacIntyre; sisters-in-law, Theresa Doucette, Sydney and Mary MacNeil, North Sydney; and many nieces, nephews and grand-nieces and grand-nephews, as well as by her special little friend, Payton Thomas.
Besides her parents, Peggy was predeceased by her husband, Laughie; sister, Catherine Farrell and brothers, Donnie MacNeil and Frank Doucette.
Celebration of Peggy’s life will take place Wednesday, August 28, 2019 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Sydney Memorial Chapel. Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, August 29, 2019 at St. Mary’s Church in East Bay, with Rev. Anthony O’Connor and Rev. Bernie R. MacDonald officiating. Interment to follow in St. Mary’s Parish Cemetery.
Memorials in Peggy’s name may be made to the Cancer Unit or the An Cala Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, a charity of your choice or a blood donation made by contacting Canadian Blood Services.
