Sydney

It is with great sadness that we, the family, announce the peaceful passing of Dolly Matthews, 87,  of Sydney on Friday, December 18, 2020, in the An Cala Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.

Born in New Waterford, on February 24, 1933, she was the daughter of the late Herbert and Isabel (MacLeod) Lawson.

Dolly was a member of St. Alban’s Church in Whitney Pier and was an active member of the choir for many years. She had worked at Crowell's early in her marriage, then was employed by Zellers for over 30 years until her retirement.

She was an avid baker who passed her love and skills onto many family members.  Sunday dinners were always a family affair, with good food, great desserts and lots of love. She was an enthusiastic Toronto Maple Leafs and Blue Jays fan, if you dared to cheer against her teams, you may find yourself on the outside. She would make the rounds to Whitney Pier, Point Edward, or Margaree for a game of Skat, 7’s or pass the Ace, and she was never above giving a heebie jeebies (whammie) to even the youngest of players. When she retired and moved into a Seniors complex, she enjoyed all the social aspects; darts, bingo, party planning for holiday events and birthdays.

She is survived by her daughters, Heather (Hal) MacLellan and  Kim (David)MacKinnon, both of Sydney; sons, Edward, Cambridge, ON and Bruce (Jackie) Sydney; sisters, Florence Morgan and Joan (Gus) Cino, both of Stoney Creek, ON; brothers, Herbert, Freelton, ON and Edward (Hildegarde), Burlington, ON; grandchildren, Tracy, Ryan, Jan (Jason), Ashley (Curtis), Holly (Ryan), Cameron (Kelsey) and Victoria; great-grandchildren, Hayden, Lucas, Rorey, Ada, Aubrey and Patrick; and many nieces and nephews.

Dolly was predeceased by her husband of 34 years, Fraser in 1985l sisters, Ivy (Albert) Lewis and Dorothy (Stewart) Phillips; brothers, Donald (Dorothy) and Greg; sister-in-law, Carrie Lawson; and daughter-in-law, Gloria Matthews.

The family would like to thank Harbourstone, in particular the staff of Fisherman’s Cove. The nurses on 3B at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, and the nurses and doctors of the An Cala Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.

A memorial service will be held at St. Alban's Anglican Church, Whitney Pier on Saturday, October 16 at 2 p.m., with Rev. Myrna MacMullin officiating.

Memorials may be made to the Hospice Palliative Care of Cape Breton or the An Cala Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
