Mary Helen McNeil

August 18, 1923 - June 3, 2020

Sydney

Mary Helen McNeil,96, of Sydney, passed away Wednesday, June 3, 2020, at her residence.

Born in Dominion in 1923, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Martha Farrell.

At the age of 38, Mom was widowed with eight children whom she nurtured and mentored. It was her high school dream to become a teacher. With the encouragement of her brother, Aubrey, (her Rock) she studied at Xavier College. To complete her teaching degree, she was required to study at St. F. X. University. Being a strong courageous woman, she moved seven children to Antigonish where we all studied. She was a true role model.  She often said her main goal for her children was that they all be educated; a goal that reached fruition.

When she returned to Sydney, she taught Grade 4 at Cornwallis School, a life-long dream was then a reality.  She spoke often how she loved her career and how she loved being with the children. They often called Mom the Pied Piper. When she was going home from school, the children would want to walk home with her and rush to hold her hands.

She loved to travel. She had many adventures and was always pleased to tell us her stories.  One of her greatest stories described her walk on the Great Wall of China.

To her children she was the best! Our Rock! If you had a problem or dilemma, she was always there to discuss it with you and offered great advice. She mentored us all our lives and we were blessed with those mentoring skills.  Mom was a very quiet, unassuming, strong woman who was definitely before her time. Aubrey described her as intrinsic. We will certainly miss her.

Helen is survived by her daughters, Mary Beth (George) LeBlanc, Sydney River, Joan Ling, Riverview, Ann(Bill) Vincent, St. Georges, NFLD and Patricia (Andy) Chisholm, Sydney and her sons, Tom, NB, Richard, Calgary and Michael (Andrea), Sutton, Ont.; sister-in-law, Stella Farrell, Sydney; 26 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren. She had many nieces and nephews, especially the Farrells and the Brazills.

Being the last surviving member of her immediate family, she was  predeceased by her husband, Richard"Dick"; daughter, Maureen Wilson; son, Dennis; sisters, Martha Brazill and Shirley (in infancy); brothers, Aubrey, Patrick, Jim and Tom.

A memorial service will be held at St. Theresa's Church on Wednesday, July 29 at 11 a. m., with Rev. Dennis Lamey officiating. Interment will take place in St. Anne's Cemetery, Glace Bay.

Memorials may be made to the IWK Foundation or the Comfort Fund at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. These are organizations Mom had donated to most of her life.
