Maye Elizabeth (MacPhail) MacKinnon
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Maye Elizabeth (MacPhail) MacKinnon, 86, on Saturday, November 16, 2019, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Maye was born February 13, 1933, in Baddeck, Victoria Co.
A long-time resident of Westmount, Maye was a member of the Westmount Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. For a number of years, she served as president, a position she held in high regard and loved. She enjoyed playing Bingo and trips to the Casino.
Maye is survived by her children, Melanie (Gerald) Phillippo, Westmount, Walter (Wendy), Sydney, Gary (Lynn), Sydney River and Tracy, Westmount; grandchildren, Brandon (Elise) Phillippo, Tyler (Michele) Phillippo, Daniel (Nicole) MacKinnon, Justin (Alicia) MacKinnon, Megan Shepard and Grace MacKinnon; great-grandchildren, Ava, Logan, Kellan, Brayden , Isla, Jase and Jonah. Maye is also survived by her sister, Anna (the late Clarence) Long, Baddeck; brothers, Ewen (the late Kaye) MacLean, Baddeck and Charlie (Irene) MacLean, Sackville, NS. Also left to mourn Maye's passing are her long-time friend, confidant and partner in crime, Brenda Snow and the Reid's, who are more like family than neighbors.
Maye was predeceased by her loving husband of 62 years, Taylor, as well as her parents, Jack and Katie MacPhail.
At this time the family would like to sincerely thank the EHS paramedics, trauma room doctors and nurses for the outstanding care and compassion shown to our Mom and the family during this difficult time. We would also like to thank Dr. Robert Cohen and Dr. Dustin Richler for the wonderful care given to Mom for many years.
Visitation for Maye will take place at Westmount United Church on Wednesday, November 20 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service held in the church on Thursday, November 21 at 11a.m., with Rev. Thomas Whent officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Maye may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or the Alzheimers Society.
Words of comfort can be sent to the family at www.sydneymemorialchapel.ca or e-mail sydneymemorialchapel@ns.sympatico.ca
