Murdock Joseph “Bob” MacNeil

It is with heavy hearts yet, with a profound sense of peace, that the family of Bob MacNeil announces his passing on Tuesday, September 3, 2019, at Taigh Na Mara, Glace Bay. He would have celebrated his 96th birthday on October 9.

Bob is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Teresa; his children, Frank MacNeil, JoAnn McKeown (Mike) and Cathy Greer (Brant); grandchildren, Matt McKeown, Mark McKeown, Shannon (Russ) MacKinnon and Lisa (Matt) Jobb; great-grandchildren, Rylee and Brennan MacKinnon, Tristan McKeown and Vivian Jobb. He is also survived by numerous nephews and nieces.

Bob was predeceased by his parents, JP and Mame MacNeil; sisters, Marguerite and Joan; brother, Jack; and daughter-in-law, Debbie MacNeil.

A veteran of the Second World War, Bob served as a rear gunner in the Landcaster Bombers of the RCAF and subsequently, became a life member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 138, Ashby.

Bob’s career, spanning 44½ years, was with Canadian National Railways. He was also, for several years, a board member of the Sydney Credit Union. Throughout the years, Bob enjoyed curling, bowling, golf and puttering in the backyard, but his very favourite pastime was sitting on the front veranda of 421 Whitney Ave. and just watching the world go by. Daddy was the ultimate people person. He enjoyed everyone and everyone he met thought he was a great guy. Daddy was a gentle man and a man of great faith. He quietly and devoutly practiced his faith daily and it always afforded him great comfort and peace of mind.

Thank you to the staff of Taigh Na Mara for their excellent care and their unfailing compassion.

A Memorial Service will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Saturday, September 7 at 11 a.m., with Rev. Bill Burke officiating. Interment will take place in Resurrection Cemetery at a later date.

Words of comfort can be sent to the family at www.sydneymemorialchapel.ca or e-mail sydneymemorialchapel@ns.sympatico.ca

There are no goodbyes for us. Wherever you are, you will always be in our hearts.
