Neil Gladstone "Tony" Shaw

September 1, 1929 - May 24, 2022

|

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Neil Shaw, at the age of 92, on Tuesday, May 24th, 2022. He passed peacefully, with his daughter lovingly by his side, at home in Paradise, NL.

Predeceased by the love of his life, Jemima Dallas (MacKillop), may you always be dancing together.  Parents: Margaret (MacKenzie) & Malcom Shaw; siblings: Helen (McCormack), Becky (Williams), Cora Mary (Latimer), Norman, and Kenny.

He was a Father whose abundance of unconditional love for his children will be missed tremendously by his proudest accomplishments, Kirk (Jackie) and Karen (Dean, son by marriage, aka private chef & chauffeur), as well as “special first daughter” Margaret Isenor and siblings Mollie (MacLeod) and Shirley (Frank Halliday). Uncle Tony will be missed by many nieces and nephews and by everyone who had the pleasure to meet such a kind and gentle man.

Neil took pride in being part of his community, where he was a member of the United Protestant Church of Sydney River (Brotherhood and Elder) and the Masonic Lodge for 50 years, also while being a volunteer for numerous organizations.  Throughout his life he held a variety of occupations: Halifax Dockyard; Goose Bay Airport; Sydney Jail; Swift Meats; and finally, as a proud welder with Municipal Ready Mix.  He always went the extra mile to help others, like transporting a young man to Dorchester Penitentiary (who sat between his two children in the back seat), while traveling to Boston to visit family for Easter.

Mom & Dad could be found anywhere in Cape Breton there was someone playing a fiddle, square dancing or having a Gaelic milling frolic.  They enjoyed numerous bus trips to the United States, Madeleine Islands, various parts of Canada (with special friends Jackie & Chrissie) and they even ventured to NL a few times.  Also, Dad talked fondly of his pilgrimage to Holland years ago, where he visited his brother’s grave.

Dad became a Newfoundlander over the last four years and was welcomed with open arms.  He was truly amazed and overwhelmed at his 90th Birthday celebration in Bonavista; his excitement during the festivities will forever be part of our cherished memories.  Neil enjoyed the simpler things in life: a warm sunny day; watching the neighbourhood kids play; children from daycare out for a walk; seeing animals; going for drives; a big breakfast; visitors (especially Bill & Mabel – Dean’s parents); “Hello Hello” phone calls from Nova Scotia “ anything else new and exciting” or “what’s all the good cheer today”; Sunday evening Celtic Serenade with Donnie Campbell; and being with Karen & Dean (plus having a piece of pie every night before bed).

There are simply no words to describe how much you were loved and how terribly you will be missed. But, we know the very best of you and Mom lives on in all of us.  We’ll miss the world’s best dish dryer and our neighbourhood watch guy, but we’ll cherish our memories and you’ll live on in our hearts forever.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the Melwood Drive neighbourhood (especially Duck and Peggy Phillipo) and the Ivydale Place neighbours; as well as the numerous family and friends who’ve been there for both Mom and Dad (you all know who you are).

Cremation has taken place. A celebration of his life well lived will take place in Sydney Memorial Chapel on Tuesday, June 28, 2022 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Rosemary Godin officiating. Dad will be laid to rest in Alfred Smith Cemetery next to his soul mate.

Always have time to make someone smile or lend a helping hand.
