Patricia Lee Murchison

A wonderful life, well lived.

It is with deepest regret that the loving family of Lee Murchison announces her passing on Friday, August 23rd. She died peacefully, surrounded by family and wrapped in love, in the same beautiful and graceful way in which she lived her life. Lee was a woman of great faith and she lived it every day. She faced her five-year struggle with cancer with incredible courage, never complaining, always positive. Never once did she ask “Why me?”, rather she took it all in stride and fought every step of the way.

Lee was adored by her family. Her gentle, loving manner and unwavering support were ever present. She was our rock. Lee could turn her hand to anything. She was a well-known artist, whose work adorns homes from here to the Yukon, Europe and beyond. She created incredibly wonderful gardens on the family property in Coxheath which serve as a tribute to her creative talent. She loved to entertain and made the family home a warm and welcoming place. She was a wonderful cook who loved to try new things, the results of which always delighted family and friends. She played an active role in her beloved little Knox United Church in Blackett’s Lake, to which she was committed since her childhood and which continues to play an important part in the life of our family.

Lee and Laurie have been blessed to have an amazing group of dear friends who have always been there to share our joys and help us through life’s sorrows. Their support throughout Lee’s recent journey has been so special and so meaningful for our family. Mere words can’t express our gratitude and our love for all of you.

Lee was a Dental Hygienist whose professional career spanned well over 30 years. She loved her work and always put a strong emphasis on dental education. Her patients remember her fondly. She had a wonderful relationship with her fellow hygienists and a group of them got together regularly to have a laugh and share each other’s company. Lee loved those moments.

Lee took to the game of golf later in life, like a duck to water. The rest of the family played and she decided if you can’t beat them, join them. Her joyful approach to golf allowed her and her golf buddies to thoroughly enjoy the game and one another. She loved the game because of the relationships that came with it.

There’s nothing she enjoyed more than being with friends and family, relaxing with a glass (thin edge, no stem) of quality red wine. Her laughter will ring joyfully around us and within us forever. She was a bright light which will not be extinguished. The flame of her love will continue to glow in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.

We want to express our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Ron MacCormick for his genuinely caring commitment to Lee over these past years. We also want to thank Dr. Glen Gracie, Dr. Saliba and Dr. Mahmoud-Ahmed for all that they have done for Lee. We can’t say enough about the amazing nursing and support staff at the Cancer Centre of the Regional Hospital. Your smiling faces, your commitment to your patients and your loving care has meant so much to us. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Lee is survived by Laurie, her adoring husband of forty-five years, sons Colin (Melissa), Fall River, Matthew (Natalie), Coxheath and her four beautiful grandchildren, Emma, Duncan, Eliot and Marin for whom her love was boundless. She is also survived by her father, Jim Murchison, brothers Robert (Sharon), Doug (Jane), brother-in-law Jamie Murchison, sisters-in-law Heather (Barry) Hopkins and Joan (Richard) Lourensse, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her mother, Anna Murchison, her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Murdock and Doris Murchison, her brother-in-law Carl Murchison and her sister-in-law Eileen Murchison.

Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Wednesday, August 28th, from 4 to 7 PM. A celebration of Lee’s wonderful life will be held at Knox United Church in Coxheath, on Thursday, August 29th at 11 AM, Rev. Dr. Thomas Whent officiating.  A reception will follow in the Coxheath Hills Community Hall next door.

Donations to honour Lee’s memory may be made to the Regional Hospital Cancer Centre or to l’Arche Cape Breton.
