Sydney

We, the family of Richard Francis “Dick” Wludyka, regret to announce his passing on Thursday, January 14, 2021, at the Glace Bay Hospital.

Born January 13, 1931, in Detroit, Michigan, he was the son of the late Frank and Florence (Sadowski) Wludyka.

Richard worked for Mason’s Wholesale, retiring after 38 years of service. In the 1950’s, he was well-known for playing hockey with the Sydney Millionaires and various Glace Bay teams. In 1969, he helped organize the Whitney Pier Minor Hockey Association.  That led to an affordable hockey school for children in the area known as the Cape Breton Metro Hockey School. In 2011, he was inducted into the Cape Breton Sports Heritage Hall of Fame. As an owner, driver, trainer and in later years, a judge, Richard enjoyed harness racing at the Cape Breton Sportsmans Club, which later became Tartan Downs.

Richard is survived by his wife, Shirley Marie (MacLeod); son, Frank (Antoinette), Westmount; daughter, Alanna (Murray) Conn, Sydney; grandsons, Joshua Wludyka and Zachary Conn; sisters, Delores, Audrey and Joanie; brothers, Leonard “Lennie” and Robert (Diane); many nieces and nephews; and two godchildren, Joanie Poirier and Christopher MacLeod.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sisters, Dorothy and Rose.

A funeral mass will be held at Our Lady of Fatima Church on Monday, January 18 at 11 a. m., with Rev. Patrick O’Neill officiating. Covid-19 restrictions and masks are mandatory. Interment will take place in Resurrection Cemetery at a later date.

Memorials may be made to the Cancer Centre at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital or the Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton County.
