It is with great sadness, we regret to announce the passing of Sanford “Sam” Fitzgerald, of Westmount, on Sunday, November 3, 2019, at the age of 70.

Sam was born in Neil’s Harbour to the late James E. and Margaret (MacDonald) Fitzgerald.

After graduating from Baddeck Rural High School, he completed his red seal certification in heavy duty repair, as well as bus and truck repair. In 1966, Sam started working for LeVatte’s Construction and worked at several truck repair shops before retiring from RDL Construction in 2014. He was well-known for his love of hockey and for being an avid golfer with his buddies, Kenny, Allan and Dave.

Sam is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Louise (Zwicker) Fitzgerald; son, Dwayne (Marney), their twin girls, Cayleigh and Hannah, his daughter, Emma and her mother, Michele; daughter, Allison (Darryl) Humber, step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Wayne (Lida); sister, Norma (Gary) Ball; sisters-in-law, Kay (Ed) Pearson, Marilyn (Jim) MacLean and Holly (Robert) Doyle; brothers-in-law, Albert (Pauline) Zwicker and Bernie Fitzgerald; and numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Besides his parents, Sam was predeceased by his sister, Margaret and sister-in-law, Winnie (Herb) Murphy.

Special thanks to the nurses and doctors of the An Cala Palliative Unit and the VON nurses.

Cremation has taken place.  Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Thursday, November 7 from 1-2 p.m., followed be a celebration of life at 2 p.m., with Dr. Rev. Thomas Whent officiating.  Interment will take place at a later date.

Family flowers only.  Memorials may be made to the An Cala Palliative Care Unit or the Cancer Patient Care Fund.
