Thomas Edward Lewis

With heavy hearts, we, the family of Thomas Edward Lewis, 59, of Sydney, NS, announce his peaceful passing after a brief battle with cancer on Sunday, August 25, 2019, at his home with his family by his side.

Born to parents, Ivy Elizabeth (Aulenback) and William Welcome Lewis on October 24, 1959, in Toronto, Ont.

As a young boy, Tommy moved to Cape Breton and was raised on Morrison Rd, Sydney with his brothers, David, Archie and Richard. He met the love of his life, Rose, standing in a mutual friend’s wedding in 1980 and remained devoted companions for 39 years. Their affection and dedication to one another was undeniable. Always together, their love and commitment was admired by those who knew them. Tommy's first priority and greatest joy in life came from raising his children and doting on his grandchildren.  He was an attentive and caring father, a proud and giving granddad and deeply treasured husband. Tommy was ever so generous when it came to his grandchildren and would quickly produce a new photo or story about his grandsons.  He will forever be cherished and beloved by his family. Tommy was able to appreciate the simple things in life, from a hot coffee or cold brew, a Johnny Cash song, episode of Judge Judy, driving with Rose at his side or a telephone call with one of his children. He was a hard worker with an unwavering work ethic. Tommy was a committed, reliable employee at Daniels Pub and the Bonnie Prince Restaurant for the past 17 years. He loved his job and held the highest regard for his boss, Rodger.

Tommy is survived by his loving wife, Rose; daughters, Susan Matheson (Ashley), Newfoundland,  Tammy MacLean (Brad), Manitoba and Virginia Lewis, Sydney; only son and namesake, Thomas Lewis (Angela), Sydney.  He leaves behind three precious grandsons, William, Blake and Avery. Tommy is also survived by brothers, David, Sydney, Archie, Halifax, Richard (Colleen), Glace Bay and Mark (Linda) Halifax; stepmother, Florence Lewis, Halifax; stepbrother, Mathew Lynk, Halifax; mother-in-law, Daisy Hennessey, Sydney Mines; uncle, Albert Lewis (Shirley), Sydney, along with several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sister-in-law, Verna Lewis.

Those of us who loved Tommy unconditionally will never be the same.  We are grateful for our time spent together and the fact we were able to communicate our love for him with our words and actions before his passing. Special thank you to Dr. Greg Myatt, the Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton and Cape Breton Cancer Center.

Visitation in honour of Tommy will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Tuesday, August 27 from 4-8 p.m. Funeral service will be held in the chapel on Wednesday, August 28 at 11 a.m., with Mr. Kenneth MacKenzie officiating. Interment in Hardwood Hill Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton.

Words of comfort can be sent to the family at www.sydneymemorialchapel.ca or e-mail sydneymemorialchapel@ns.sympatico.ca

"That man is a success – who has lived well, laughed often and loved much, who has gained the respect of intelligent men and the love of children, who has filled his niche and accomplished his task. Who leaves the world better than he found it, who has never lacked appreciation of earth’s beauty or failed to express it, who looked for the best in others and gave the best he had.” – Unknown
