Wilfred McLean
We, the family of Wilfred McLean, regret to announce his passing in his 86th year on Monday, September 23, 2019, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Wilfred was the son of the late Alex and Rose Ellen (James) McLean.
From 1955-1958, he served overseas with peacekeeping for the United Nations. Wilfred was best known for his passion of poultry and wildlife. He was one of the founding members of the Cape Breton Poultry and Pigeon Fanciers Association and for many years, was president of the Nova Scotia Poultry Association. In retirement, he passed this passion on to the school children in Cape Breton, working with the school board educating them on the development from eggs to chicks. Many children referred to him as “The Chicken Man”. Continuing his passion, he sat on the board of directors for Two Rivers Wildlife Park. After 18 years, he retired from MacKenzie Seed. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren were his life and he spent many hours with them passing on his passion for poultry and wildlife.
Wilfred is survived by his wife of 63 years, Frances (Tracey); daughter, Judi (Murray); sons, Charles (Gwen), Stuart (Dianne) and Steven (Anne Marie); grandchildren, Tracey, Amy, Brittany, Megan, Alicia and Shelby; great-grandchildren, Caspian, Gray, Phoebe and Dawson; sister, Eileen Ramsay; and brother, Gordon McLean.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sisters, Phyllis Ferguson and Muriel McLean and brother, James McLean.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel. A celebration of life will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Saturday, November 2 at 1 p.m., with Rev. Deb Stevens officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Memorials may be made to Two Rivers Wildlife Park or a charity of your choice..
